Having always harboured a passion for creative writing and for film, Matthew R. Ford formed Pretty Hate Productions in 2011 (incorporated as a Limited company in 2013) as a creative outlet for his and other people’s original ideas.

The first project taken forward by the newly formed Pretty Hate Productions was a feature film screenplay, ‘Losing Innocence’.

The film was an idea that had been with writer Matthew R. Ford since his days in College studying Media & Communication and had developed from a straight forward homage to films like ‘Badlands’ and ‘Natural Born Killers’ into a story in its own right.  The film screened to cast and crew at the end of 2012 and the trailer and behind the scenes film can be viewed HERE, and an interview with writer/Director Matthew R. Ford about the process can be read HERE.

During the post-production stages of ‘Losing Innocence’, Pretty Hate Productions were asked by Recre8 and Birmingham Youth Offending Services to write and direct a short film highlighting the dangers and consequences of knife crime in urban youth culture.  The result was a 20 minute film starring vulnerable young people, many of them first time actors, whom Recre8 work with on a regular basis.  The film itself, simply entitled ‘Hurt was nominated in the category of ‘Best Festival Short’  at the 2012 MVSA Awards, held in Birmingham.  The trailer can be viewed here and more about the work that Recre8 does can be found HERE.

Shortly after the completion of ‘Hurt’, Matthew R. Ford completed his Masters Degree in Creative Writing at Birmingham City University, completing his first stage play, ‘Redundant’ as his final project piece.  The experience of writing for the stage caused Recre8, on the back of the success of ‘Hurt’, to commission Matthew to write a theatre piece for their young people and to direct the subsequent performance.  ‘Behind my Reflection’ was performed to a packed audience at Birmingham’s Custard Factory Theatre and at the time of writing, Matthew and Recre8 are in the latter stages of developing their second ambitious stage play, ‘Becoming X’ due to be performed in August 2013.  Find out more HERE.

Recently, Pretty Hate productions have re-edited ‘Losing Innocence’ into a 30 minute short film and are awaiting word from 13 world wide film festivals about it’s selection.  The trailer for the short can be viewed HERE.

2013 promises to end on a busy note, much like 2012 did for Pretty Hate Productions as they once again team up with Daniel Alexander Films, whom have been partners on both ‘Losing Innocence’ and ‘Hurt’, on ‘The List’; an original TV Thriller mini -series developed by Daniel Alexander and Matthew R. Ford.

The pilot episode screenplay has just been completed and the project will be cast in time for projected filming in October 2013.

As well as ‘The List’, Pretty Hate Productions and Daniel Alexander Films are planning to cast and film the short film ‘Redundant’, a screenplay which has been adapted by Matthew R. Ford from his stage play of the same name and ‘The Driving Instructor’, a tense and thrilling short film about what we see and don’t hear.

It has been a busy first two years for Pretty Hate Productions and along the way they have formed various working relationships with some amazing professionals whom they are proud to call partners in various projects.  2014 promises to build further on the material that they are slowly building behind them.
